So, let's start with what is a greeting card. Initially,
greeting cards from postcards (which one side without folds) and cards,
folded illustrations usually show a message of greeting or other
sentiment. They can either be printed or handmade. Now,
with the advent of the Internet though, virtual greeting cards have
evolved to reflect not fit the definition mentioned above. Although
greeting cards are usually given on special occasions such as
birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, they are also sent on
'non-occasions' to say 'hello' or 'thank you'. They are manufactured and / or handmade by hundreds of companies large and small. Hallmark
Cards and American Greetings are the largest manufacturer of greeting
cards in the U.S. This is England, where more cards per head is shipped
from other countries. UK continues as a world leader in this field, as well as leading the world in the design of greeting cards.
What laid the foundation for the greeting card industry, and when and how it all began?
Habit
of sending greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, who
exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year, and to the
early Egyptians, who convey their greetings on papyrus scrolls.
In the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards are being exchanged in Europe. Germany
is known to have printed New Year's greetings from the woodcut in early
1400, and handmade paper Valentines are being exchanged in various
parts of Europe in the early to mid 1400's.
However,
in the 1850s, the greeting card had been transformed from a relatively
expensive gifts, handmade and hand-delivered in a popular and affordable
personal communication, mainly due to advances in printing and
mechanization.
This
trend continued, fueled by new trends like Christmas cards, which first
appeared in published form in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole hired
artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card he could send to
friends and acquaintances. Technical developments like color lithography in 1930 produced encouraging greeting card industry forward.
During
the 1980s the trend began to turn, with consumers increasing looking
for greeting cards that are differentiated from standard offerings. At the end of the 1990s market is clearly starting to separate into three distinct segments:
A. handmade and premium cards
2. mass produced cards
3. e-cards
So, this is about how the greeting card industry began and evolved. Although
the current trend is to send greetings via e-cards, there is a need to
maintain the traditional greeting card industry and preserve the ancient
tradition of sending greeting cards through conventional means.
