A picture of two students and a breakdown in what the pay around terms are for essential services and the overall
picture is such that they may owe £53,OOO when they graduate but forget about books - there are other more important spending priorities: Jaber Mohamed and Patrick Collinson report the latest financial situation of Britain/s students.

Students starting university in September this year and paying £9,000 tuition fees will graduate with debt averaging an astonishing £52,000 according to the National Union of students and research suggests that the undergraduate is spending nearly twice as much chatting on their mobile or surfing the internet than is spent on books.

The Average student cost of living varies and the Save the Student website found in May cost of living after fees is £640 a month with rent the highest element at £230. But the National Union of Students said that accommodation costs can be much higher - Rent for a 39 week academic year in 2011/12 averaged .... £5,348 in London which is £594 a month and £4,224 outside which is £469.

However, first year students pay the most going into halls of residence which include a food plan ... so, reference the University of Birmingham which charges nearly £7,000. for a 42 week stay at Mason residence - and this includes a meal plan - But there is hope on the horizon and a self catering deal starts at £3,255: so thats better news!

Its possible to save on this expensive cost of living by renting low cost private accommodation in the second year.

Small amounts spent on books, compared to booze has always been controversial but if contrasted to the costs of mobile phones which surpassed course materials .... obviously the mobile phone is an essential but expensive necessity!
So students spent £24 on mobiles and £12 on internet a month and on home phone connections. But
books and equipment is close to £125 a month: and it all adds up to a big bill The names of some of the contributors remain anonymous!
