The
mosaic of clear decorative matrix, of easy application on any surface took advantage on
painting because of its lasting and
practical character. The main paintings may be seen in the cities of Herculano and Pompéia. The painters used four painting techniques. 1 - The walls were re-covered of plaster and are painted
imitating marble tiles. 2 - Enormous panels with people, animals and plants gave the impression of windows opened to the exterior. 3 -
Faithful reproduction of reality valuing the richness of details. 4 - Panel of deep red generally with a reproduction of artistic Greec workmanship imitating a theatrical scene.
The
sculpture as the architecture reflected the realism and the practical character of the Romans, although they admired the Greek sculpture. They were faithful representations of the people and most of them were from the Roman society and emperors.
