Set in Oklahoma during the Great Depression, this play depicts the reunion of two formerly famous bank robbers. Floyd and his wife Ronnie have rented a guesthouse in the middle of nowhere, and Floyd nervously prepares for Roy’s arrival. When they last parted four years ago, they were the best of friends and an ambitious team. Roy left his hat behind, and Floyd has nostalgically been saving it for him all this time.

Roy arrives with his new wife Flo, and the men begin to realize how much each of them has changed. Roy, who used to date the glamorous Ronnie, is now married to a very plain woman. He is full of bluster, bragging about his nightclub in the North and his mob connections. Roy even pulls his tuxedo out of his suitcase to model it for Floyd and Ronnie. He faults Floyd for not doing anything with his life after their bank-robbing days ended.

Roy drags Floyd’s story out of Ronnie while Floyd and Flo go off to swim in the pond. Ronnie reluctantly tells Roy that Floyd drinks secretly, has no plans for the future, and spends most of his time sleeping or playing dominoes with her. Roy thinks Ronnie is still too good for Floyd. He attempts to seduce Ronnie and convince her to come back North with him. Ronnie and Roy are in the middle of an embrace when Flo and Floyd return.

Roy denounces Floyd as a wimp, and Floyd pulls out a gun in retaliation. While Floyd is cornered, Flo confesses that there is no nightclub. They just wander aimlessly from place to place, and Roy’s real reason for coming to see Floyd is that he wants to start robbing banks together again. While this confession is occurring, Floyd falls asleep on the bed.

He wakes, and the four spend a pleasant time telling ghost stories and reminiscing. They blame their malaise of the last four years on the Depression and the dust created by the drought. They long for their lost glory days, but there might be a return to bank robbing in their future yet.
