PC and R&R
Every loving parent wants his or her children to be safe, healthy and happy. How do we teach our children to put them in the path of safety, health and happiness? First, it should be
simple and second it must be consistent with their observation of our own behavior. You can’t tell them to behave in a certain way if do not try to behave that way yourself. It should be simple so that they can remind or measure themselves easily with
respect to the goal or criteria at every stage in their lives.
Two words simply abbreviated as PC can convey the entire message. PC stands for
prudence and
compassion. PC is simple and all encompassing. It is the modern essence of the 10 Commandments and Confucian philosophy. Prudence and compassion are words which can start simply but whose dimensions grow as the individual
grows. It is the wise parent who can patiently grows the deeper meaning of prudence and compassion for each child as time passes.
By itself, prudence without compassion can be cold and inhuman. Compassion without prudence can be foolish and futile. Prudence and awareness of consequences is the rudder of life. Compassion connects us to the world we live in and provide us with vision. With vision and control, all things are possible.
They will strive to be prudent and temper their acts with compassion because that is the most sensible and harmonious way to live and have the greatest potential for deriving contentment and happiness. A
corollary to PC needs to be added for the young to emphasize a non-obvious aspect of PC that is important for peer relations. The corollary is R&R for respect and
regard. They shall exhibit respect and regard others and their parents so the strong ties will anchor them and give them collective strength.
PC can be a very simple test on any action taken by people in the news today. Each case can also serve to illustrate the application and power of these two words
