Pranayakalam is freshening experience from a debutante director Uday Ananthan.A musical
love story produced by A.V Anoop, has screen play by K.Gireesh Kumar ,cinematography by Jibu Jacob and Lokanathan & editing by L. Bhoominathan .
It is for those who have tasted love, for those with unrequited love and for those who would love to fall in love.
Though a love story that has been retold, the way the story is narrated, the cast and the message that is being conveyed makes the
film stand apart.The
plot is simple : that of a wealthy boy (Ajmal Ameer)meeting a lower middle class girl (Vimala Raman)who has the family burden to shoulder. To make matters worse they belong to different religions and the girls father is a rude and money minded police man ( Murali). The two after initial apprehensions from the heroines part, falls in love. But matters become worse when Murali
comes to know of this .He thrashes up the
hero and locks him behind the bars. How the hero comes out and what happens after the heroes father comes back from the
gulf comprises the rest of the plot.
Story line is simple, but the characterisation and handling of the plot is interesting. There are no loose ends and each and every character is there with a purpose. The love and bond between the father (Balachandra Menon) and the hero touches a chord in our heart. So is the relationship between Thilakan and his
son ,Balachandra Menon, which reflects the socio cultural scene in Kerala, where the older generation are left to tend for themselves alone while the younger generation are away abroad ,busy in the rigours of life. We witness some poignant moments when the father bids adieu to his son going back to his job in the gulf.
All the lead characters have done a commendable performance though that of new comer Ajmal Ameer lacks finesse and needs polishing. But a young hero ,a new face, playing his age is to be noted with relief after the torture of watching above age college goers running behind heroines.Vimala Raman has done full justice to the role with her looks and histrionics.
Songs are worth listening to ,escpecially the lullaby by Kalyani Menon ''anthi nilavinte''.
Melodious rendition by K.S Chithra ''etho vidhooram'' sets the mood for the story. The classical rendition by K.J Yesudas is a welcome change in todays fast paced film music.''Parayu prabhathame'' by Gayathri is a familiar tune but a soothening experience.
In short the film is a sure eye opener but should be watched without any presumptions or prejudices about a youthful romance.Practically thinking characters are a far cry from the ''lets live together or lets die'' type of chocolate youths in our films so far.
