How do you save yourself if you are in the middle of a battle and your side are out-numbered? You lie down among the corpses and pretend to be dead. In the movie ''The Warlords'' thats how the main character, General Pang Qing-Yun greets you. Crawling out from a piles of his dead army bodies, General Pang was defeated and devastated. His army of 1600 peoples were out numbered and abandoned by his so-called allies.Narrated by Jiang Wu Yang, this movie brings us along the journey of three sworn brothers - Pang Qing Yun, Zhao Er Hu and Jiang Wu Yang - telling us how they meet each other, took the pledge of brotherhood and leading their armies of 800 peoples to conquerer cities during the Taiping Rebellion. Pang was a man who is full of ambition and determination. Being the leader of the armies and the brotherhood, he was looked up upon by both Er Hu and Wu Yang.Despite having a small army of just 800 peoples, Pang was willing to gamble and pledge to conquer Shu City in 10 days. Pang stood firm when his warring strategies was being questioned by Er Hu. Somehow his strategies worked and eventually he leads his armies to more victory after the capture of Shu City. Alas, Pang''s greed of power not only makes him betray his brothers but also causes him his life.Er Hu was the leader of a group of bandits before Pang came along and changes his life. Er Hu - the Chinese Robin Hood - robbed the rich to feed his peoples who are poor and starving. Er Hu display loyalty to his people when Pang decided to punish two of his boys whom has committed a crime, Er Hu tries to bail them out from Pang''s judgment. The weakness of Er Hu was he like to rush when making decisions.Wu Yang was the least ''glamorous'' among the three brothers.
It is obvious that Wu Yang look up to Pang very much. An incident during the early part of their meeting where Pang killed the commander of the army the bandits were looting teaches Wu Yang the thumb rule of battling - ''strike the head and the body will weaken''. True enough, Wu Yang killed the commander of their first enemies with his own bare hands and that''s how they won their first battle and capture Shu City. There are times when Wu Yang was torn between Er Hu and Pang.Despite being a war movie which is showered with blood shedding, ''The Warlords'' also tackles the love triangle between Pang, Er Hu and Lian. Lian was torn between Er Hu and Pang. She loves Pang but yet she has the duty as a wife towards Er Hu which she has to full-filled. In the end, Lian was mistakenly seen by Wu Yang as the enemy who comes between the brothers and have to be killed. Will Wu Yang have the courage to kill Lian whom he has known so well since young? Will Pang kill Er Hu for what Er Hu has done by going against his commands? How was Pang killed in the end?Watch this movie and you shall find out. Prepare for some heart wreaking scenes.Put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself whether will you make the same decisions as what Er Hu, Pang and Wu Yang have took when you are only presented with only two choices?
