The Last Station in Russia

Movie Summary   by:SM THOMPSON
ª

According to ITN Helen Mirren stands up for Women in Film .. and the actress Helen Mirren has voiced her views on the lack of good parts for women while promoting her new film
title:  The Last Station in Russia.  Helen Mirren is an Oscar Winning actress and in this latest film she plays the wife of Leo Tolstoy the great Russian Writer. ... a biopic!  The movie tells the story of the
elderly Tolstoy played by Christopher Plummer and his struggle with fame and wealth alongside was Tolstoy's commitment to other values!.

This film ... The Last Station in Russia ... is directed by Michael Hoffman and the movie takes the actress
back to her roots - her roots in Russia as she spent some of her childhood there.

But one often is asked the question by one's students are what point does an actress cease to be English if her background is Russian so I suppose one answer to that is when the whole of her life is offered to one or other language and indeed to one or other culture .. then that actress is English not Russian and lives within the English Framework or that actress is Russian and lives within the Russian framework.
But argue my students what if that actress is bi linqual  ........well that's a hard question to answer so lets give it a whirl ... one or other language will master the other I think in my experience and be the dominant one and the other language or culture will become a second language or a second culture ... thanks ITN  for the airing of the role of women in film and the scarcity of parts for women so perhaps here I might put it a plug for the role of the playwright or writer in film ... perhaps they can make room for Us women writers and playwrights instead of having to soldier on alone in the world!
