Fifteen Minutes

Book Summary   by:cort     Original Author: Dave DeChristopher
ª

In a town where everyone who’s anyone has their own late-night talk show, Nancy is no exception. Every night while her husband is sleeping next to her, she broadcasts from their bed. Nancy has a very special show planned for tonight, the first day of sweeps week. A live studio audience of one woman sits acroos form Nancy’s bed, shouting encouragement enthusiastically. The theme of tonight’s show is infidelity, and for the first time in twenty-three tapings, Nancy’s husband Tony wakes up. Her first guest is Libby, a woman who had an affair with her boss at the factory. After discussing, in detail, how the affair began as a result of sexual harassment and Libby’s fear of losing her job, Nancy calls the first commercial. Between takes, Nancy says tongue twisters and refuses to talk to her guests. When they come back from break, Nancy calls her next guest onto the show. Libby is about to confront the married man she had an affair with, and Nancy pulls back the covers to reveal Tony. Nancy really gets into it, playing the parts of both guest and host. Libby reveals they have a daughter together that Tony hasn’t seen in four months or paid support to in over a year.
After the second commercial, Nancy brings Dr. Allegra Shayne-Bledsoe, who had been waiting in the bathroom, onto her program. Dr. Allegra counsels both Nancy and Libby about their feelings, and the woman composing the audience shouts encouragement to Nancy. Dr. Allegra yells at the guest to shut up, because she’s the one with the medical degree. When Nancy confesses she feels the need for revenge against Libby, Dr. Allegra tells her that’s a natural feeling. Because they are out of time, Nancy will have to carry out her revenge on tomorrow’s show. The audience protests. She can’t be there tomorrow; she is scheduled to be a guest on a woman down the street’s show instead. To appease her audience of one, Nancy takes out a knife and stabs Libby in the shoulder. She also tells the audience that she and Tony are going to save their marriage.
