The
history of Halloween began approximately 2000 years before now, with the Celtic festival known as Samhain. The Celts lived in Ireland though it wasn’t known as such then, in the UK and in the northern parts of France. They considered the beginning of the year as November first and
celebrated it as such. It was considered the end of the summer season and its harvest and the start of the cold dark winter. The Celts often associated
winter with death as they struggled to survive its freezing temperatures and lack of resources such as growing crops, dry wood and warmth. An important of understanding the history is the knowledge that the Celtic people at that time held the conviction that the
night before this new year day the boundary of two worlds weakened. They
believed that the world of the
dead and the world of the living could merge on this one night. Samhain was celebrated the night before, October 31, because the ghosts of their long dead were returning to earth. This is the most frightening of the Halloween beliefs, and undoubtedly where the scary spooky aspects of Halloween’s history got its starts. Celts were convinced that these dead-come-to-life damaged crops and caused other trouble.
On the other hand they also believed in something good about Samhain, the reason for the fun behind the history and derivation of Halloween celebrations. The Celts believed that their priests, the Druids were ale to predict the future thanks to those who arrived back on earth as part of the living dead this night. They were often comforted by these predictions while they strove to make it through the long, dark, cold, and dreary winter months.
No Halloween history would be complete without mentioning the Romans who conquered the Celts. They too had their Halloween beliefs, although it was referred to as Feralia. Eventually the Pope designated October 31st all Soul’s Day, the day before All Saint’s Day. All Soul’s Day, the most recent history of Halloween, was created as a commemoration of those who have died.
Today traditional activities include trick-or-treating,costume parties, horror films, visiting houses for candies, making silly or scary faces, holloving out pumpkins, candy apples...Traditional colors of Halloween are orange and black. Halloween is now celebrated in many parts of the world.
