Aeneid

Book Review by: illaade

Original Author: Virgil
Virgil’s Aeneid
Virgil’s Aeneid is a Roman historical epic fashioned in the earlier styles of the Iliad and Odyssey
of Homer. Written during the reign of Augustus Caesar of imperial Rome, it aims pinpoints particularly the superiority of Roman civilization, he employs the dactylic hexameter style of epic poetry writings which could be chanted as well as retain a literary gorgeousness. Although replete with historical assumptions, myth and legend, Aeneid is less of conflict between gods (as in the Iliad), but rather as that between men fuelled only by gods.
Virgil goes down memory lane, into the times of the Trojan wars, and the choice of a hero Aeneas by his mother Venus, to lead the remnants of the escaping Trojans to founding a new city that will be called Rome. In the course of the voyage, Aeneas falls into love and eventually disappoints Dido, an African queen. Consequently, and after so many battles, he gained ground in Latium and Alba Longa which later culminated into Rome- a corruption of the name of a later king, Romulus.
The Aeneid, because of its national significance of citizen awareness aimed at rubbishing Greek egoism, enjoyed the status and popularity of a national anthem. Whether being read or sung by bards of the time, it drove home the point Virgil and his sponsor, Augustus, was trying to make. And it survives, over generations of more imposing literatures, to be one of the most respected literary pieces ever known.
