Abstract: Story of a Farmer

Book Abstract by: Sameer_Kak

Original Author: Clarence Day
Although he was asked to manage an army (presumably because of his good family background), he had never studied warfare
nor did he know much about the handling troops... But, these handicaps did not prevent him from winning the war.
In between looking after the farm, and farm related chores, he even found time to draft the nation's constitution. And when the time came, he was elected President (of the newborn nation). Though he was not very good at making speeches, people trusted in his sound judgement and innate goodness of heart. In other words, his character could be relied upon; this the people of that time considered sufficient to elevate him to this august office.
The portrait of the farmer that emerges is of a sound-thinking and trustworthy man. Dignified and solemn (even at a young age), he was not much given to humour. Of course, the farmer in question is none other than the first President of the Unites States - George Washington himself! Interestingly, the story has been titled Story of a Farmer - instead of the Story of the President - presumably because George Washington saw himself as a farmer first and foremost. There can be no higher tribute paid to the man.
This is the account of a great man, a man who has made a name for himself in the history books. But, this brief biography has been presented in a somewhat unusual manner - partly amusing and partly non-serious, the narrative is never disrespectful (to the man or what he stood for). The author has probably tried to intermingle historical facts with personal details to make the story more interesting to the average reader.
Charges have been laid against him of being a temperamental man; considering the pressures he was facing, and the heavy responsibilities he shouldered, this is not surprising. At most times he displayed a benign nature, but there was steel within his soul. It could not have been otherwise, considering the greatness that he achieved.
Though he met a great many persons on his farm, he rarely talked to them about matters of state or the war. He was alive to the earth nonetheless. His noblest quality, of course, was that whenever his nation asked him to make sacrifices for her sake - or for the sake of her freedom - he gave up everything else to defend her cause before God and the people.
