To our best recollection, no book has ever been written, or compiled, that provides brief
biographies of U.S. military personnel
who were killed in a particular war. This is certainly understood. Who on our planet could organize and present a collection of
biographies of well over 100,000
casualties of WW II, or 58,000 casualties of the Vietnam War, or 36,000 casualties of the Korean War. It would be a monumental task. Yet this book, Not Forgotten, saw the possibility for this type of book covering the first Persian Gulf War (1991), also known as Desert Storm, which had more than 400 casualties, which made the task somewhat manageable. The author was drawn to this war because two of his daughters were in the U.S. Army at the time, although not sent abroad, and two of his daughters' spouses, also in the Army, who were deployed to the war zone in Iraq and served honorably. The author proceeded to collect newspaper and magazine articles that listed various casualties. More importantly he contacted the Casualty Offices of each military branch to ask permission to contact the families of lost Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines. Or course, the Casualty Offices could not provide personal data to the author such as their home addresses, but would be willing to mail the author's letter to the families asking for biographical data for each fallen military man and woman. Our author leaped at the opportunity and sent a supply of his letters along with a questionnaire asking for information such as, names of family members, name of hometown, high school and college attended, early interests, military branch, rank, how the military member was killed, and where he or she was interred. Not all families responded, some had moved without providing forwarding addresses. Therefore of the many contacts made about half did not receive printed biographies but instead had their names listed in the front of the book. The other half had their biographies, many with photos included, printed in full pages in the book. These families strongly expressed their gratitude to the author for spending the time and effort to produce such a fine memorial to their sons, daughters, and spouses. Our author felt a strong feeling of emotion compiling his work and was extremely happy with his work which took three years to complete. In addition to receiving many orders for the book from the military family members and their friends, he also received some orders from their high school librarians so that a record of their sacrifices could be displayed on their library shelves. The author still has a fair quantity of new copies of his book remaining and makes them available on Amazon.com under his name, Daniel J. Grey. He believes that since this type of book has never been compiled before, it would make an excellent collector's book and a wonderful memento for veterans of the early Persian Gulf War (Desert Storm). It is in hard cover, in attractive royal blue with a gold star emblazoned on the front cover. No. of pages is approximately 225.
