La Vita e Bella….
Life is
Beautiful <
BR>
This is a
story of an ordinary man living a very simple life but left extraordinary effects on people that came to know him. The story of Guido Orefice, an easy go-lucky guy who came to Arezza, Italy in 1939, to work as a waiter in the hotel where his Uncle Eliseo was the maitre’d. He met his lovely “Princessa” Dora, a rich school teacher, who practically “fell in his arms from the skies” (she fell from the loft of a barn while being chased by a wasp) and Guido was lovestrucked at an instant. Guido has a small bodyframe and a plain-looking guy, not as handsome as Dora’s boyfriend, Signore Rodolpho, who’s a well-known public official but because of sincerity, ingenuity, will power and wit won Dora’s heart, she became his loving wife. They were blessed with a
son, Josue.
The setting was during World War II at the onset of Nazi infiltration of Europe and Stalin’s Fascist’s movement with the main goal of purifying the Aryan
race, “the superior race,” or so they say. Guido’s people suffered severe discriminations. In their town, there are some stores with signs that says: “Dogs and Jews are not Allowed to Enter.” When asked by son Josue why is this so, he explained to him in a way that the young mind could understand and at same time not leave a mark on the sub-conscious, he never taught his son to hate back. He explained that its because they just don’t like them Jews and dogs entering their shops, “Everybody does what they want to,” just as much as he would not like spiders.
Guido was always joking and funny even at the worst situations, everytime he get to be taken away by either the Nazi SS agents, for an investigation or the German soldier who caught him entering the hostel for the women, in the hope of finding his wife, but of course he was also worried inside but because his son is looking he never showed it. He was protective of Josue and is making sure that like him Josue will be capable to face life with a happy or positive disposition. He exemplified the Hebrew’s views in living fully as a human person, having been able to face life’s challenges and expectations in a noble and worthy way with much courage, generosity and fidelity. In the story Guido faced life’s challenges with zest. Turning harsh situations into favorable ones, wittingly, laughing his way out of a mess. He viewed life to be beautiful no matter what the situation.
The story was narrated by Guido’s son Josue/Joshua who along with his mother, Dora, survived the Nazi concentration camp. Josue considered his survival to the present as a true gift from his father, who made a lot of sacrifices and did his best to shield his young mind from the Nazi’s atrocities against their race. All Josue knew of what had happened then was that he and his father joined in a game and that they’ve got to earn a thousand points to win first prize, that he should be tough and strong and not ask for mommy nor of regular meals and snacks while in the game. And if they won, first prize, “there would be a thousand points to laugh like crazy about” and of course to ride in a real tank, especially made for the winner.
