There are many events that occur in the span of one''s lifetime that effect their quality of living. Although these changes alter the overall conscious of one''s being, I conclude that the most consequential moment in mortal existence is the juncture of passing from this realm into the next. Numerous cultures, religions, and philosophies speculate upon the existence of a soul and of events that occur before this era, and of what is to come in the hereafter. These speculations and theories are moot to my precise point, though many topics may stem from it in subsequent discussion. My current focus, in its entirety, is upon the period of time in which a person undergoes the ultimate transformation of this lifespan. An equally profound moment of transformation is the metamorphosis one undergoes at the time of their birth. I exclude this pivotal change from the discussion, not due to the variance of opinion as to when
life truly begins (at birth or during conception), but rather due to the complacent state of the individual during such an early stage in their development. An infant through its toddler days, and often beyond, has little control or understanding of its environment. It is only upon the emergence of comprehensive decision-making, that a person may begin to analyze and interact accordingly with the forces around them. For this reason, I exclude the dawn of this mortality. After digressing in my prelude, and furthering that digression into my exclusions, I feel that the reader is adequately prepared to explore the time-frame I have alluded to. As with any great change a person may undergo,
death brings a person from one mental state to another; the former being familiar, the latter being, at the very least, an uncomfortable variance in your standard of living. However, unlike "average" significant occurrences, casting aside a person''s beliefs may be regarding an after-life for the purpose of this discussion, death stands apart in that none alive have experienced it, and cannot divulge intermittent details. Therefore, it''s a distinct unknown. Disregarding what lies for you beyond this moment, a certain reverence must be placed in the journey. Logically, one can conclude that the first process one undergoes may be very similar to the stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance), though the steps may vary in length and degree. Upon arriving at the acceptance stage, one must wonder what fills the rest of this grand, unique moment? Could a never-before felt sense of serenity fills the recesses your mind? Could it be that the object of neglect, whatever it may have been, in your life up to this intellectual transfiguration, is suddenly clear to you? Are you filled with regret or relief, with sorrow and longing for days gone past, or satisfaction and appreciation for days gone by? Whatever this new degree of perception may bring, you may know with assuredness that it will be like no other, that were it possible to assess an entire life, from uncertain and tentative beginnings to whatever end the winding path of life has brought you to, this moment is filled with more amplitude than any singular moment thus far experienced. There is rarely an exact timetable given as to when this juncture may occur, and few preparations can be made in its anticipation. One can only hope that when the intersection presents itself, and you begin your journey from one plane of existence into another, that you are accessible enough to fully experience everything this destination has to offer; that your one unique spark of realization, with whatever it may bring, is owned entirely by you. This is my hope, for me... for those that are close to me... and for people everywhere.
