Sexual energy- the thread of Cosmic connection
Societies and Communities that severed its sexual
connection to the whole Cosmos have lost a vital aspect of life. For example, Despite being the land of Kamasutra and Tantric sex, Indian society, for the last several hundred years, has successfully suppressed most meaningful experiences of the sexual. And lost touch with its power, wisdom, and holiness.
It was not like this always. All ancient societies connected sexual energy with the Divine. It was neither taboo nor dirty. Sumerians performed the Sacred Marriage. Greeks referred to this type of ritual sex as the Hieros Gamos. It was also practiced by the Egyptians in the cult of Isis till the Roman era
In India, the Tantra tradition, overseen by the god Shiva and his consort Kali/Parvati, continue for thousands of years. Practitioners of Tantra seek enlightenment and union with the Divine through sexual rites and other forms of meditation and ritual.
After traveling monks took Tantra to China, it was combined with Taoist philosophy and Chinese medical theory, and was used by those who sought to increase health and (in some cases) achieve physical immortality.
Some sects of early Christianity also incorporated sexual rites into their religious practices.
But, somewhere on the path to modernisation, we lost that eternal bonding, and the result?
Sexuality became a bad word. It became much-maligned aspect of human activity with many otherwise-sensitive persons relegating sexuality to the lower aspect of human being.
And simultaneously it became an obsession, because we have lost the real connection to our sexuality.
Sexuality has been so repressed that it has become a mental habit. Sex is something we think about and fantasize about but not something that we have a chance to do very much. And when we do it, it is impregnated with fear and guilt.
Then what is the real connection between Sex and Spirituality? While spirituality symbolizes the eventual longing of a human being to attain the ultimate truth, Sex is perhaps the strongest manifestation of his/her desire for a strong relationship.
Also, many who have seen the connection between sexual energy and Spiritual energy then propose that in order to increase one''s spiritual energy, one should sublimate one''s sexual energy.
Remember, Sexual energy and spiritual energy have their same source, of course, that source being God''s energy. They have at the same time an even more intimate connection, because, as already revealed, they both concern themselves with unifying the individual with the universe. In the case of sexuality, that unity appears to take place on the material plane, but it also is taking place on the spiritual plane.
From the perspective of the inter-relation between the universe and the individual, sexuality is the thread, which binds on a physical plane that which is already bound on a spiritual plane.
From the perspective of the relation between the universe and the individual, then, sexuality is one of a number of energy forms that manifest the interconnectedness of all creation and play their role in the evolution of that Interconnectedness, i.e., the universal soul.
Hence, sexuality is essentially a spiritual matter. This does not mean that individual humans should not pay attention to the physical or the emotional content of the specific sexual act in which they are engaged. On the other hand, it does mean that unless the spiritual nature of the sexual act is recognized, unless the healing is found on the spiritual level, all other efforts will ultimately bear no fruit.
After all, there is only that identity with one another that can save us from the endless spiral of alienation.
