Short Lesson on Philosophy of Religion

Book Summary by: Canaday

Original Author: Marquis D. Canaday
The philosophy of religion concerns itself with understanding rational study in meaning and justification of the radical
claims of religion dealing with God or an existance of a divine being. Once upon a time, religious philosophy was regarded by classic thinkers like famous Greek-Athenian Aristotle as a part of the world of the metaphysical. It has been branched  as a natural theology. Typically, philosophy of religion ask the question... what is God? Most Western philosophers concern themselves with the God of monothiestic religions. In the attempt to search for the meaning behind what God is, there are various ideas to what it means to different people. For example, many religions and philosophical systems think God is the superlative creator of the world and universe. Some concepts of what God is may include the physical attributes, various names, and a sex. Arguments listed here are some of the metaphysical meanings for the existence of God. They are: A.)The ontological argument which bases arguments on a being beyond which no human mind can conceive.  B.)The mathematical argument which defines God as an absolute infinite. C.)The cosmological argument which argues God as a being around at the start of   the universe known as the first cause. Arguments listed here for the argument for the nonexistance of God are as followed. They are: A.)The free will argument states that the properties of free will contradicts themselves due to the fact that knowing the future, a divine being could change the choice, whereas it would not be a choice at all. B.)The problem with evil asserts itself by the knowledge of God being both the maker of good and evil due to all of the suffering and illness in the world from the beginning of time. C.)The chicken and the egg argument states that if a creator which is God existed since the beginning of time, someone or something(another god) may have been responsible for his creation. This theory reenforces the feminist theological view that God may very well be a woman since they are living beings which give birth.
