Henry James

Book Summary by: Robor

Original Author: Wikipedia
This article details the life of Henry James. Born in New York City in America, Henry James became gifted in philosophy and
literature talents. During his lifetime (1843-1916) he wrote twenty novels, one hundred twelve stories, and twelve plays. Henry James made little money from his novels; however, he had born into a wealthy family. His father was well-known as an intellectual of the day with friends such as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Nathanial Hawthorne. As a young man he traveled back and forth from America to Europe. He studied with tutors and attended Harvard Law School for a short time. His interests were more in literature than law. His first published short story was entitled ‘A Tragedy of Errors.' His first novel, ‘Watch and Ward,' appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. One aspect of his novels that is characteristic is understanding and sensitivity, especially of his female characters. Henry James also wrote essays that did not attract a lot of attention until after his death. One of his most famous essays is ‘The Art of Fiction.' He is most famous for his tale ‘The Turn of the Screw.' Henry James used ‘stream of consciousness' avidly and exhibited good characterizations in his novel. He was very interested in the contrast of American and European culture and it shows in his works. Eventually, he became a British citizen as a protest against America for not entering World War I in 1915. He died a year later.
