THE OTHER SIDE OF MALTHUSIAN THEORY
ACCORDING TO Malthus, population tends to grow faster than the supply of food, he stated that population would grow geometrically while food production would grow arithmetically. In other words population growth would out weight that of food supply
He stated that if population growth is not checked through what he called positive checks there would be famine and hunger that could lead to death. By positive checks he means the moral reduction of population through the taking of human lives such as war, famine and disease. in the days of Malthus, these are suppose to be the only moral means through which the population of man could be reduced. He made this ascertain given the fact that he is a Reverend minister of the gospel of Christ, if he advocate any other unethical practice it would go contrary to his belief. Though he later advocated late marriage in life that would result to couples giving birth late in life thereby reducing the fast rate of population growth in the world.
WHAT THE Reverend minister failed to reckon with was the improvement in science and technology, today, even if the food production in China that has the greatest population in the world has not doubled their population at least it has gone a bit above their population other wise one cannot justified how they can have surplus to export to other countries, thanks to the improved agro-bio- technology that has enhanced good headrest.
Malthus failed to realized that even if people married late in life, but with the improved health sector there is going to be less infant and adult mortality rate, this translate to mean that the fewer people that are born stand the chances of making it to adulthood, unlike the case with the early stage of man on earth when there are very many things that endangered the human life. In our modern world the advent of good and responsible government, protective and enforcement of laws, better social condition and culture has helped to increase the life expectant of man in that he can now stay longer that those before his and this will help to increase the population of the world as against when there are no improvement in the aids to life.
The Malthus theory of population do not really stand the pressure of time.
