Social Evils in India

Academic Paper Summary   by:nishabdh     Original Author: shyam

The caste system, (dividing the people in the name of forward caste, backward caste, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe) is one of the social evil prevalent in India since ages. It's origin can be traced back in the vedas wherein a detailed explanation about the four varnas, i.e, castes 1.brahmanas, 2 .kshatriyas,3. vaishyas, 4. sudras can be found in tenth mandala 'Purushasukta' of Rigveda.

It states that the Brahmanas were born from from the mouth, Kshatriyas from arms, Vaishyas from the thighs and Sudras from the feet of the creator himself. Thus they are considered to be the lowest in their origin and were assigned the duty of serving the rest of the classes. They were placed in the least position of the society and they were devoid of all the privileges and facilities in the society. They lacked self-esteem and social respect in fact they were treated as untouchables and were made to live in the outskirts far from the colonies where other castes lived. There movements were restricted, entering into the educational institutions was prohibited, using a public well or a lake wasn't allowed for sudras

They were made to live in most inhuman conditions with minimum knowledge of personal hygiene and how could one expect of them being knowledgeable as they were kept far away from receiving any kind of education. There was no change in their conditions for ages in fact it deteriorated further until the emergence of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar in the Indian political scenario. Dr.B.R.Ambedkar who comes from the downtrodden caste was well aware of the sorrowful state of his fellow-beings in fact he, himself had experienced several humiliations despite being a highly educated person and a known barrister from the states.

His thoughts that education alone can change the fate of of this caste were proven wrong when he was still treated as an untouchable and no amount of his education could command any respect from the society. This left him frustrated at times and made him to give a serious thought about the measures to be taken to root out this social evil from the Indian society.

It was at this point that he decided to fight for the cause of his fellow-beings.His long lectures and speeches on dalit's rights and the privileges were ridiculed by many national leaders, busy fighting for the nation against Britishers, sometimes it worried Gandhiji , Nehru and prominent leaders who strongly believed that this social revolt started by Ambedkar wasn't helping the national cause in fact it's weakening it.

But, despite all the opposition and criticism Dr.B.R.Ambedkar sticked to what he believed in.His role in framing the constitution and incorporating the special provisions for the people belonging to lower castes , which guarantee the securities in all respects -social, political , economic are highly commendable and historical in nature.

Today, citizens of India enjoy equal rights and no one can be discriminated on the basis of caste. In fact it's an offense to practice untouchability.Special provisions like reservations are provided for the upliftment of the downtrodden in job recruitments, political participation, to help them develop from the centuries of backwardness caused by the other castes of the society.

But it's also a known fact that mere existence of laws cannot help unless they are implemented to the core. There are still some attrocities taking place against the poor in the name of caste which needs to be redressed immediately.

On the whole one can say lot is achieved a series of radical changes which seemed to be far from reality, unachievable goals leading to nowhere were achieved but still few things need attention if this caste system has to be completely erased from the Indian grounds and minds.
