When the epic hero Rama broke journey there on his way to Lanka

This was once the capital of Tipu Sultan and is situated on an island two branches of the Kaveri River. The antiquity of the island dates back to prehistory when the epic hero Rama broke journey there on his way to Lanka.

Thee temple of Sri Ranganathaswamy is one of the oldest Dravidain temples in Karnataka. It was first built in 894 A.D. and later expanded during the reign of the Hoysalas. The great Vasishnavite philosopher Ramanuja sought refuge here in 1133 when he was persecuted for his religious beliefs. Later from 1610 to 1799, it was the capital of several Mysore kings. The fort was built with double ramparts, much of it being crumbled now. The spot where Tipu’s body was found is here, marked by an obelisk. Darya Daulat Bagh, one of Tipu’s summer palaces is here. It is a building made in indo- Saracenic style.

About one kilometer away at the Eastern end of the Island is the Gumbaz built by Tipu as a mausoleum for his parents. There is also a beautiful jumma Masjid which is said to have been the favorite place of worship of Tipu sultan. An ancient church founded by Abbe Dubois in 1800 is also situated here.
