Last Duchess

“My Last Duchess” is a narrative poem.
The speaker of the
poem is Alffonso II the Duke of Ferrara.
The poem is based on historical events between Alffonso II the Duke of Ferrara who lived in the
16th century and his young
wife Duchess. Also, the poem shows how is the Duke new wife
behavior between the people, and what she should do.
Alffonso married her
after his Lucrezia
old wife died in 1561.
The second wife is from
powerful family, as he shows the visitor through
his palace. The Duke starts to see her
disgraceful behavior of his new wife. He
claims she flirted with everyone and did not appreciate his “gift of a
nine-hundred-years-old name.” As his
monologue continues, the Duke in fact caused the Duchess’s early demise, when
her behavior increased. “He gave a
command” then everybody stopped speak at the same time that the Duke returns
for arranging another marriage from another young girl from powerful
family. As the Duke and the emissary are
leaving the painting behind, the Duke points out other notable artworks in his
collection.
In
that time the woman who is married from man from powerful family, she should be
respecting his name. She should do what
her
husband does. She has to know that
from her parents, before she gets to her husband house without knowing anything
about that.
