As often the case, many people become stewards of the church because God made a miracle in their lives, granted a petition, cured a mortal sickness, which eventually made a better turn for their lives. SINULOG devotees are living testimonies to such. Yet, to them they remain strong and steadfast in their faith in God with or without such miracles and wonders. To some, it has become their vow to serve God in whatever way they can. GOOD HEALTH, LONG LIFE 1. Irenea Calzada, a candle vendor at Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, says she has been praying for good health and long life to Santo Niño ever since she started selling candles when she was only eight years old Now 82 years old, Irenea maintains a healthy body and still sells candles at the Basilica del Santo Niño in Cebu City. She stated that when she danced for Sinulog, she offered first to Santo Niño for she can survive for the rest of many crises of her life and her family. She said her being a candle vendor has taught her so much about life as she too helps other people in their petitions by praying for them. 2. Aurora Salaño, on the other hand, had to experience a near-death accident before she discovered God’s presence in her life. Back then, she confessed that much of her youth was wasted because of her addiction to drugs and vises like alcohol and smoking. Consequently, she lived a life of wrong decisions and wrong turns, a life without God and family. “I ran away from home and for quite some time it was only me, my friends and my vices,” she narrated. Until a car accident that almost took her life made the 360 degree turn in her life. “I could hardly remember how it exactly happened. But I knew I was drunk and alone when I drove for home after a night out with my friends. What I clearly remember is that when I saw the accident coming, I found myself asking for help from SANTO NIÑO to deliver from the hands of death at that very moment,” she said.
MIRACLE Miraculously saved from accident, Aurora then took it a sign to start a new life by breaking free from her worldly ways and finally returned back home. “It was an eye- opener, a life-changing experience and I really thank to SANTO NIÑO for His intercession. It is because of Him that I offer the rest of my life to God in whatever way I can serve Him” she narrated. At 35, she remains an active devotee of SANTO NIÑO and continues to share her story to inspire others to live a life only for God. 3. Rodrigo Cesar, other devotees who got miraculously healed fro serious ailments like cancer, tumor, heart problem, etc. Rodrigo was a prostate cancer patient who depended on medicines for treatment. Despite the situation however, he didn’t lose hope. So, when his wife brought him to Cebu to be prayed over the Basilica, he prayed that SANTO NIÑO would grant his petition for healing. “I was supposed to have my scheduled operation a month after we went to Cebu when right at the hospital; the doctors declared that I’m cured of my ailment. They said it was really a miracle that happened,” he narrated. Many testimonials from various people about SANTO NIÑO’S miraculous interventions, have already been said, some also left unsaid, but isn’t what really matters is our FAITH and our will to abandon all our worldly ways for the love of God? Sinulog more than just a celebration is also the most opportune time to thank the Child Jesus, the SANTO NIÑO for all His blessings.
