It is noteworthy that while Vardhman Mahavirswami lived in the north and north -east India, the largest number of his followers are in Gujarat. the cult of non-violence which Gandhi preached and practised and which has made Gujaratis largely (thought not entirely) vegetarians can presumably be traced to Jainism. Jain lore a rich cultural heritage of Gujarat. And the Jain community has played a vital role in the commercial, social and cultural life of the state.
