Ten of thousand of single
girls suffer in silence, filled with self-doubt and self-pity.
The Philippines is such a family-oriented society that marriage is considered as the only natural way of life, especially for
women. Single hood is commonly assumed as merely a waiting stage before marriage. So, when this period extends to the thirties, people begin to wonder, what’s keeping her from getting
married?
Single hood is a vocation, a call of God of God, a way of serving the Creator. Not everyone is called to marry. Every person, married or single is subject to periods of
loneliness. It is part of life. One longs for
companionship, because a man is a social being. Being married, however, does not always guarantee companionship. The loneliness experienced by unhappily married people can be even worse. To be unattached is to be alone, to be by one’s self, which is not synonymous with loneliness.
Singleness, as in any state of life, has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantages are: freedom to do as one pleases without being accountable to
anybody else, make own decisions, can pursue own goals, more privacy. Disadvantages are: may fell left out sometimes in “paired” worlds as ours, not being first to anybody, more responsibility in taking care of finances and everyday concern, cannot depend on any one person for companionship.
Women in the stage of singleness must cultivate her personality, get involved in activities she really enjoys, explore possibilities of personal growth through meaningful work, assist people in need. Cultivate a positive outlook on life and find fulfillment in achievements. Just remember own uniqueness as a human being and instill in mind that she is special and beloved by God.
