Ramayana is the one of the greatest epics ever written in the history of Indian culture. This epic is a saga of love, good over evil and most of it sacrifices. The
sacrifice that Lord Rama made the sacrifice that Devi Sita made and not to forget the sacrifice that Laxman made and followed his
brother for 14 long
years. All of us
know about the four brothers and Sita, about their love and sufferings that they had gone through. However, I am not too sure of how many of us know about Urmila - Laxman''s
wife,
yes, the woman, who could not even spend few days with his husband after she got married. Lord Rama was exiled for 14 years, Devi Sita was with him, Laxman decided not leave his brother but yes he left his newly wed wife, and went away for 14 years. My question is - did Laxman or any one understand her pain, and is she given the adequate credit for what she did and what she had gone through. She had to be all alone and wait for her husband for 14 years soon after she got married; she kept waiting and kept fulfilling his responsibilities. Do we think that Laxman was right in his decision of leaving his wife all alone? We all understand that he did so in order to fulfill his responsibility towards his brother but did he have none towards his wife? More so, even after all this I did not find any appreciation or any credit given to Urmila, except for on e poem that I had read in the school curriculum, thankfully I took Hindi so that’s how I got to know. I have seen Ramayana on T.V. heard people talking about it where they even forget to mention that there was an Urmila. What an irony..Is this what Indian women are meant for? just sacrifice.
