Hanuman Chalisa

Book Summary by: Sameer_Kak

Original Author: Tulsidas
The dust from the guru’s footsteps,
Cleans the mirror of the mind,
I narrate the unsullied repute of Rama,
That gives rise to the four fruits;
A humble man remembers you, son of the wind,
Give me strength and wisdom, destroy my afflictions;
Glory to Hanuman, ocean of virtue and learning,
Glory to Hanuman, who illuminates the three worlds;
Messenger of Rama, unsurpassed in strength,
Son of Anjani, child of the wind;
Valorous and valiant is Hanuman,
Dispeller of ignorance, friend to the virtuous;
Adorned with ear-rings, splendid in appearance,
With curly hair, and skin the color of gold;
Armed with a mace, holding aloft a banner,
The (ascetic’s) sacred thread adorns his shoulder;
Avatar of Lord Shiva, offspring of lions,
The world salutes his splendor and his glory;
Intelligent and virtuous,
Impatient – to do the work given by Rama;
To hear of Rama’s greatness gives him pleasure,
Rama, Sita and Laxman have found a place in his heart;
Before (mother) Sita, his finer aspects come forth,
His dreadful form put Lanka on fire;
His terrible form, the demons slaughtered,
To carry out the work of Rama;
He brought sanjivini (elixir) to restore life to Laxman,
Rama was delighted;
Rama praised him highly,
And said - you are as dear to me as my (brother) Bharat;
May a thousand persons sing of your glory,
And then embraced him;
Sanaka and the other sages, Brahma and the other gods,
Along with Narada and Saraswati, all sing your praise;
Where Yama and Kubera are guardians to the world,
The poet and the scholar could not fully describe your glory;
You have obliged Sugriva,
By introducing him to Rama – and (thus) giving him the throne;
Vibhishan accepted your counsels,
And became the ruler of Lanka, as the entire world knows;
The sun, that was thousands of miles and an eternity away,
That sun was no more that a sweet fruit to you;
Rama’s ring, you placed in your mouth,
And spanned the ocean, it is no surprise;
The most difficult of tasks (in the world),
Become easy with your grace;
You stand guard at Rama’s (palace) doors,
None can enter without your consent;
Who seeks your refuge, he gains all joys,
Why should one worry, when you are the protector;
Only you can withstand your force,
The three worlds tremble to hear your roar;
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not approach,
When they hear the name of Mahavir (Hanuman) being recited;
All ailments and suffering go away,
By reciting the name of Hanuman - without stopping;
Hanuman releases that one from troubles,
Who remembers him in thought, word or deed;
Ascetic Rama is king over all beings,
It is that Rama, whose work you have made entire;
That devotee who comes with an (unfulfilled) wish,
His deepest desire is fulfilled;
In all the four ages, yours the glory and the grace,
Your fame radiates through the entire world;
You are the protector of hermits and saints,
Beloved of Rama, you are the destroyer of demons;
You can bestow (supernatural) powers and treasures,
As a result of a boon from (mother) Sita;
You are under the protection of Rama,
Always remain his (loyal) disciple.
Your devotees attain to Rama,
And the sorrow - of many ages – is purged;
Upon death, they enter the abode of Rama,
And are born (again) as devotees of God;
They do not take any other deity to heart,
As the devotees of Hanuman attain all happiness;
All troubles come to an end, all sorrows are erased,
Who remembers mighty Hanuman;
Glory to Hanuman, lord and master,
Have mercy upon me, as befits a guru;
Who recites this (Hanuman Chalisa) a hundred times,
Will be released from all bonds, and find much happiness;
Who reads this Hanuman Chalisa,
Will attain enlightenment, Lord Shiva is witness;
Tulsidas is a devotee of God, forever,
Therefore, Lord, set up an abode in his heart;
Born of the wind, remover of troubles,
Auspicious is your image and form,
Along with Rama, Laxman and Sita,
Reside in my heart, as a king of kings.
