Autobiography of a Yogi

Book Summary by: shaambhavi

Original Author: Yogananda Paramahamsa
For anyone with a scientific temperament, interested in paranormal phenomenon, Autobiography of a Yogi is a great place to
start and continue, till he achieves his own spiritual destination . It has written by a great master who hailed from the east and served in the west. It is for all who are devoted to the search for the truth, truth that is beyond orient/occident; Truth that is universal. Beginning with an autobiographical account of his parents and childhood, goes on to give vivid descriptions of the levitating saint, the tiger swami, saint with two bodies. perfume saint, sleepless saint, joy permeated mother, The Woman Yogi Who Never Eats and various others. What makes it different from other similar accounts of miracle related saints is the clarity and incisivity with which the causation of the phenomena is explained. The chapter `two penniless boys in brindavan' reinforce the reader's faith and awakens him. A detailed account of the swami's spiritual quest, meeting with his spiritual preseptor (Guru), his ascent to monkhood while following academic scholastic pursuits culminating in his acquiring his bachelor's degree are all interwoven in an attention holding, fairly humorous manner. Interspersed with simple facts and humor of life are great, profound truths that have the potential to unite the world. The revealing of the intrinsic, innate harmony between Hinduism and christianity has the potential to make fanatics of either faction to embrace each other in an inclusive grip which does not threaten the existence of one's own faith. There are chapters devoted to Therese Neumann, the Catholic Stigmatist, Luther Burbank - A Saint Amidst the Roses, India's Great Scientist, J.C. Bose. There are accounts of the swami's meeting with Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. It drips with devotion to the Guru. This book is a `must read' and deserves an undisplaceable place on the bookshelf of every sincere traveller on the spiritual path, every student of metaphysics and paranormal phenomema, every layperson wanting to hold on to divinity in the midst of chaotic reality.
