Lugano is the third financial Swiss place, the god mother swiss city in regatd to population, the eight in extension. In general one of the most important cities of Switzerland, in all terms with an important history. The first historical documents indicating the existence of the city date in fact from 875. The city, already possesed by the Ducate of Milano, was occupied by the Swiss in 1512 and they remained there until 1798, year in which church and tenaments started constituting part of the Confederation. In Lugano have sejourned many Italians, and persons of the Renaissance. Alexander Manzoni, Michael Bakunin, the artist Joseph Biro, Francois Rene of Chateaubriand, Frederich Nietzsche and still many others. The city and its architecture have mainly a Lombard caracter, takeing into account also the territorial continuity. Among the most beautiful buildings the Roman cathedral of Saint Lorenzo, of the second half of the XI century, with its facade of renaissance designed by the architect Giovanni Antoniuo Amadeo, and the small church of Santa Maria of the angels, with the refreshments of Bernardino Luini. Precious testimonies are encountered in the old city, for example in the street Nassa or in street Pessina or in the recommended Piazza Riforma (Reform Square). But Lugano in the past, and also thanks to its extremely mild climate and wih the presence of the lake, has been the siege of important villas. Some of them still remain today, such as Villa Saroli, Villa Florida, Villa Ciani, the contemporary Museum of modern art.
In regard to the contemporary architecture to be taken into account are the cantonal Library , erected by the architect Rino Tami between 1940 and 1941 with modern space concessions, the palace of congresses, opera by the architect Rolf Otto, 1965-1975. The most significant imprunt ist however been offered by the archgitect Mario Botta. In the Swiss citadine, are appear however in his atelier, near the river Cassavate, the Banc of Gottardo, 1988, and Palace Ransilla, in full city center, apart from the numerous administrative and commercial palaces. An important example of its style is the fermated pensilline of the autobus in the center of Lugano; an opera that has has sculpted by means of braveness..
Built with aan access structure, there''s metallic carpentry covered by transparent panels of polycarbon that let one distinguish inside, depending on the light, the structure lements. Then at night the light modifies the color of the panles and signs, like a sort of big calendar, the stations.
Lugano is at least worth visiting, for its past anf for the peace of the city, with the beauty of its lake.
