Ceroc Ceroc is a dance style that originated overseas and was introduced to Sydney in 1991. Since then it has spread
to Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand.
Nicky Haslam owns the Ceroc and Modern Jive Dance Company. Originally from England, Nicky was the founder of Ceroc in Australia. The Ceroc and Modern Jive Dance Company teaches
classes throughout Sydney.
Ceroc is a smooth and stylish blend of jive, dirty dancing and latin. It is a very popular and increasingly fashionable partner dance. It can be danced to most styles of music including modern chart hits. Ceroc is easy to learn; even the most
beginner dancer can learn a few simple moves and still look impressive.
A typical Ceroc night is three hours long starting with a 45-minute beginner class where you learn a few basic, fun moves.
This is followed by 30 minutes of “freestyle” dancing where you can get up and practise what you have learnt.
The class is then split into two for another 45-minute class. Beginners do the Beginner Progression Class, a thorough, personalized revision of the Beginner class and the Intermediates do the more challenging Intermediate class. More “freestyle” social dancing where you can mix with new friends follows this.
There are also monthly dance parties and an annual Theme Ball that provide more socialisng and dancing opportunities. Workshops held regularly throughout the year enable you to consolidate moves and skills at a more intensive level than can be done in classes. A workshop can also make the leap from Beginner to Intermediate class a little easier
Hip Hop Funk and West Coast Swing workshops are taught in conjunction with regular Ceroc classes.
For those who enjoy a challenge there are opportunities to learn a choreographed routine that is performed at Balls and other Ceroc shows during the year. The yearly championships allow you to compete with Cerocers from interstate and overseas at you own level. There are categories for Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced dancers as well as a Showcase category for those advanced dancers who enjoy choreographing their own routine.
The beauty of Ceroc dancing is any age group can enjoy it and it caters for individual differences in ability.
