An invaluable
site for anyone
attempting to learn the
Welsh language. Created by Suw Charman
– a learner herself due to feeling frustrated with the lack of
online resources
for adult Welsh
learners. Clwb Malu Cachu (lit. translation “Bullshitter’s
Club”) has everything a learner could wish for whether they are just starting
out or trying to improve their Welsh language skills. The easy to follow
self-translating homepage links to a number of useful and regularly updates
cheat sheets covering a
variety of topics – grammar, place names, conversation
fillers and, of course swearwords are covered to name just a few. The site also
gives tips on how to learn the language and, in addition to the ‘Get Fluent’ CD
Roms on sale through the site, has a
list of teachers and courses available
throughout Wales.
For those attempting to get a feel for Welsh culture there are
reviews of welsh
language newspapers and magazines, blogs, press releases, book reviews (though
these a primarily in Welsh) and song lyrics – both traditional and
contemporary. The site also has a variety of short stories written in Welsh
with helpful vocabulary lists provided. A chat page will soon be up and running
and there is also a mailing list which learners can join. The list operates in
both Welsh and English and had a rule that noone is corrected unless they have
asked to be – thus giving learners a space to try out their Welsh without fear
of being made fun of. The site contains a great deal of information, but well
set out so it is very easy to navigate.
