I wish to point my thoughts towards the issues face by
people in call center/BPO
industry. There is no denying act
that this
sector has generated whole lot of employment
opportunities in emerging countries like India. But I feel
that this opportunities have come with a great price. I see
that increasingly companies are trying to attract talent
for getting more people to this industry and the young
generation gets motivated to join them as its a low hanging
fruit and easily reachable. Initially the salary is very
promising. But however I personally have seen lot of issues
a) Less time for social life - This is mainly because by
the time other people come home people working in this
industry get on to work. This results in stress in family
relationships
(b) Increased mental stress and physiological issues
(c) Salaries most of the time
don’t grow as fast as those
in IT sector, which
creates a disparity between IT and ITES
sector. Initially the salary which was the attractive
factor for the
person to join the company, now becomes a
pain after the person has worked in ITES sector for 4 years
(d) Many times the growth opportunities offered are limited
to a person with ordinary skills
(e)Absence of challenging jobs most of the times increases
the boredom as same kind of job is repeated on a daily
basis.
(f)Artificial names and accents creates a pseudo culture
within a person and the person behaves with two
personalities
ITES sector has created also effected other sectors of the
economy mainly sales and accounting as many of the young
talented cream of people today prefer call center to the
sales job as they don’t have to travel aggressively and
carry extensive targets
I think organizations and collages must take interest and
steps in doing a career counseling for the students to
ensure that they do not land up in ITES sector only because
that is the low hanging fruit for them to get employed.
This would result in creating a vast community of people
who are not happy with their jobs
