The last National Population headcount took place some 15 years agoin 1991.A whole lot of dust was raised as to acceptability
of such an exersice, due to myraids of discrepancies that came up during the headcount exersice.
As this years census kicks-off in less than a month time . Governments should take steps to avert any trival-controversal sentiments that could mare the result of this coming headcount,especially as regards the issue of religion,ethnicity,e.t.c,which has been suggested to and even removed in the census registrary as a non-important matter.
This dust raised by
Government action had pitched variouse religious and ethnic leaders against it,leading to an earlier threats by this agitators to bouycort the exersice should the government made good of its decision.
Arguably,one ,without being unduely sentimental could see through the veils of such agitations and counter agitations as it relates to each party's line of reasoning . However, one equally would agree that it makes sense that all these parties are reasonable in their demands since its a factor towards the headcount exersice-the determination of the geographical and otherwise indusied population density of the space of any particular nation , and as in the overall statistical index of that country.
Whether we vote for or against the
inclusion or non-inclusion of ethnicity,religion.Let us realize that the major issue lies in the very motive,importanc and success of headcount in the history and life of any nation irrespective of where one lives or what one believes in e.t.c.If , with nigeria as acase study,where every issue is unneccessarily politisiedto the detriment of the common populace.It would be an enomouse duty for all these agitators to put heads together on a common ground of compromise.Let us have a footing onthough not perfect, to look forward and willing to amend in the future.
