the
mystery of life. There are scientific and spiritual
theories about life and this universe. Many of us look
forward to the progress of what may be
called 'Scientific
Spirituality', a convergence of the two streams. This
article talks about the possibility of a Holographic
Universe and its spiritual significance.
University of London physicist, David Bohm, postulates
that
the universe is in reality an illusion, a
phantasmagoria,
an enormous and beautifully detailed hologram.(A
hologram
is a three-dimensional photograph made with the aid of
a
laser). Bohm bases this on a discovery in 1982, at the
University of Paris, by Alain Aspect and his team. They
found that under special cirumstances, subatomic
particles
like electrons are able to connect without time delay
with
each other irrespective of their distance apart which
could
be millions of miles. This is not in accordance with
Einstein's principle that no communiation can exceed
the
speed of light.
When a hologram of an object is cut into pieces, each
part
of the film, illuminated by a laser, exhibits a whole
version of the original image. Every part of a hologram
contains the entire picture. Bohm postulates that the
particles are connected with each other not because of
any
communication between them, but because they ae in
reality
not separated. He feels that at a fundamental level
they
are united or exhibit 'oneness' or 'wholeness'. This
leads
to the view that there is a dimension, characterizing
the
universe, not apparent to us.
Some scientists postulate that the brain is also a
hologam.
Just as a hologram converts a range of frequencies into
a 3-
d picture, the brain, behaving like a hologram,
converts
frequencies received through the senses into our
everyday
world. Evidence has been collected to back-up the the
claim
that the brain behaves like a hologram. When this is
superimposed on Bohm's theory, it appears that the
holographic brain selects some of the frequencies out
of
the universal spread of frequencies and creates our
world
of sensory perceptions. Thus as Eastern philosophies
postulate, our solid material universe is an illusion.
Researchers feel that many para-psychological phenomena
(for example telepathy) are more easily understood in
the
light of the holographic paradigm. As Grof recently
noted,
if the maind is actually part of a continuum, a
labyrinth
that is connected not only to every other mind that
exists
or has existed, but to every atom, oranism, and region
in
the vastness of space and time itself, the fact that it
is
able to make forays into the labyrinth and have
transpersonal experiences no longer seems strange.
The holographic paradigm may be borne out by further
research or it may die it's death, but in any case the
truth about the universe may be quite different from
what
we have been led to believe.
