heDIGITAL VS. ANALOGUE

Most, if not all, technology or gadgets these days are based on DIGITAL
electronics. Gone are the days of analogue technology like vinyl or
camera films. People today opt for cds instead of vinyl or old cassette
tapes. Home theater speakers are all the rage with new models coming
out almost every month. MP3’s are the new practical way of getting
music, its dirt cheap, readily available, and accessible to practically
anybody in the country. You can’t see anyone bragging about their vinyl
collection anymore cause vinyl isn’t mass produced anymore. Digital
technology has also paved the way for communication. Home appliances
like the microwave oven are now better and more convenient to use than
the old turbo wave oven. Digital cameras have come a long way and are
the best cameras around and are the most practical as well. Technology
has certainly advanced a long way in such a short span of time. Cell
phones are nothing nowadays without their multi-functionality like
cameras, or music playback. This is what most people think to be true.
It’s because most people haven’t really stopped to compare both digital
age electronics with that of analogue in a fair manner.

First
off let us begin comparing two SLR cameras one digital and the other
the traditional film. Digital SLRs are definitely cheaper than its
counterpart. This is because the camera no longer requires film for it
to operate, hence it also skips the film development process and
expenses as well. Pictures that are taken by digital cameras can be
sent through numerous ways. It can be sent through e-mail, blue tooth,
MMS, infra red, and etc. Producing the picture is also simple all a
person needs is a printer and some ink and there you have your picture.
Next in line is the traditional film camera. Its more expensive and a
bigger hassle since the film needs to be developed. Furthermore, you
cannot preview your shots unlike a digital camera where you can see
your shot and just erase it if you don’t like it. Camera films however,
do not have as much buttons as digital cameras making it less complex
and giving it an easier learning curve. The rule of thumb about
machines is that the more parts it has and the more complex it is the
more likely it is to breakdown, which is the case for digital cameras
unlike film cameras. The most powerful digital cameras out there are
only as good as a 35mm film which is the film used by a simple snap
shot camera. Now compare the quality of those pictures with the ones
taken using a 120mm film and let’s see the difference. We can also say
that the quality of the pictures of films don’t deteriorate as the
pictures are created through a chemical process whereas the printed
pictures will last a 100 years.

Mp3 players nowadays carry
tons of music around 1000-5000 songs or even more. They’re not as bulky
and heavy as its walkman counterpart. Getting the music for your player
is also as easy and cheap as dragging the necessary files to the mp3
player itself. You don’t have to bring cassettes with you since you
don’t have to change your music, its all in that single piece of
machine. Here’s the catch, most mp3 files are just compressed data of
the real thing which means they’ll never really sound as good as
cassettes. Mp3 players do save money since you don’t have to buy
cassettes anymore, but the mp3 player itself is very fragile. A walkman
was once joked as a machine that could survive a nuclear blast and mp3
player on the other hand can only withstand simple knocks before it
gives in. Plus cassettes are never subjected to the flaws of music
files like compression or file corruption. Downloading music from the
net is technically illegal unless you pay for it or you have a copy of
the music you’re downloading, so if you’re a good law abiding citizen
it actually just costs the same as the real thing since you have to buy
it anyway. If you think that the rechargeable Lithium Ion battery is
convenient just wait till it gives in and you’ll be shocked that your
ipod’s batteries can’t be replaced.

Technology today isn’t
really getting better per se, but it is getting more convenient. Most
things today are slimmed and cut down in size so it could just fit your
pocket. All my stuff are so small that I can fit them in a duffle bag
my dad’s equipment needs a pick up truck to carry around. Hands down my
fathers stuff beats mine in quality. Digital cameras are no match for
the real thing and walkmans still sound better and are definitely
tougher. Even vinyl is better than its modern counterpart the cd. DJ’s
in America still prefer vinyl over cds since vinyl demands more skill
and offers better sound. The real issue at hand is that people
shouldn’t wholeheartedly believe that new is better. New is different
that’s true and better in some ways. New things today are more
convenient, but are worse in quality so whether you chose convenience
over quality is up to you. I’m just saying that when the time comes,
convenience won’t outweigh the importance of quality in buying gadgets.
