Today millions of people use cell phone for communication. It is hard to believe how people communicated 15-20 years back when cell
phone was a rarity. Today the
technology is so advanced, we can do some many things with our cell phone. But who invented cell phone?
v History:
Cell phones have been around for more than 60years but it became public only in the 1980s. It was in the
year 1947 when researchers first developed the idea of creating mobile phones that used cells and would identify a user in whatever specific region he or she was initiating the call from. However the technology was limited and needed some time for development.
Ø Cell
phones for public: With all the testing for years cell phones eventually went public in USA in the year 1977. The first trials for
cellular phones began in Chicago and then other cities, Washington D.C and Baltimore area also joined in. Japan was not far behind as they began testing cell phone service in the year 1979. In the year 1983 Ameritech started the first American commercial analog cellular service in Chicago. By 1987 there were more than a million cell phone users and it was clear that something had to be done to curb the ever increasing of cell phone frequencies.
Ø New standards: In the year 1988 Cellular Technology Industry Association was setup for research of new application in cell phones. In 1991 a new standard was set by the Telecommunications Industry Association, the TDMA Interim Standard 54. Three new technologies have evolved into industry standards for cell phone telecommunications since then:
· TDMA IS-136,
· CDMA IS-95 and
· GSM
v Dr. Martin Cooper:
Dr. Cooper is considered the first inventor of cell phone and the first one to make a call on cell phone in the 1973. It was his rival at the bell labs, Joel Engel whom he had called. Cooper grew up in Chicago and has a degree in electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Cooper was hired by Motorola in 1954 and worked on developing portable products, including the first portable handheld police radios, made for the Chicago police department in 1967.
