Abstract — This paper seeks to explore the
design strategies adopted by some of the Software Houses in a developing country like Ghana. In looking at some of the locally developed software, a critical look is given to what is involved in
good software design. What appropriate standards to adopt and finally, a comparison is made of the locally developed software with their foreign counterparts.
Computer is a useful tool in today’s management of the
Business Systems. Computers continue to play useful roles in the area of Education, Aviation, Government, Health, Research, Accounting, etc. Another important Computer System which has impacted our Socio-economic lives so much is the Internet. The Internet system has changed the way we go about our Education, Business, Science, Medicine, Travel, etc.
You cannot have a good Computer System without a good System Design. System Design principles exist in different Computer Systems, both Hardware and Software Systems. For the sake of this paper, the design of Software Systems will be considered. In our today’s world, what is involved with a good Software System? In the design of the Software, what features do we consider?
There has been a general cry by some Local Software Houses in a developing country like Ghana that they have been losing most of the
International Competitive job bidding to their foreign counterparts. What this paper seeks to do is to take a critical look at the System Design aspects and other useful issues of some of the locally developed software and try to benchmark with the International Standards. Referring to International Standards, this paper will consider Total Quality Management and E-Business
initiatives of Software
Development.
Looking at good Software Systems brings to mind big Software organizations like Microsoft Corporation, Sage ACCPAC, Sun Systems, SPSS Inc, Oracle Corporation, etc.
The Internet which has gained much popularity was developed as a result of good software system design.
In looking at good software systems, there are key issues which need to be looked at. It is always appropriate to look at whether the appropriate company is adopting a suitable international Quality Management Systems. Again the designed software system has to take into considerations, appropriate links which can have access to the Internet. The Internet or embarking on the journey of e-business has become so important in the development of software system that you will be living in the dark if you fail to implement best e-business initiatives in your developed software systems. Embarking on a journey of e-business will improve your
customer base. To be successful in e-business initiatives, the following will have to be observed <1>.
Make it easy for customers to do business with you.
2) Focus on the end customer for your products and services
3) Redesign your customer-facing business processes for the end customer’s point of view.
4) Wire your company for profit*: design comprehensive, evolving electronic business architecture.
5) Foster customer loyalty – a key to profitability in electronic commerce
A look at software developed by the giant software companies like Microsoft Corporation, Sage ACCPAC,
Sun Systems, SPSS In, and Oracle Corporation will depict that all these companies have taken time to adopt standards of International Total Quality Management Systems. Also these companies have embarked on good E-business initiatives. By embarking on good E-business initiatives, all these companies will be making it easy for their customers to deal with them, and thus increase the size of their customer base: a key to profitability of any organizations.
