Fawlty Towers is considered by many to be the best
television comedy show ever made, and I would be inclined to agree with
them. Fawltysite.net is a tribute to a program that is at the pinnacle of achievement when it comes to comedic plotlines and comic timing. There is something in the nature of comedies with limited
episodes that seems to attract a cult following and Fawlty Towers is no exception, as this website testifies. The site is quite comprehensive - it contains details about episodes, information about cast members, an A-Z guide, facts about the show, a Fawlty quiz, links to related sites and of course, merchandise. Although there might be something endearingly quirky about wearing a Fawlty Towers
t-shirt - the question is, would Basil himself approve?
As I mentioned earlier, Fawlty Towers has a limited number of episodes - twelve in all. However, you get the feeling that the high quality of each and every one of these episodes is testament to the amount of time that had to spent on each one. Full credit should go to John Cleese and Connie Booth for channelling their considerable writing (and acting) talent into twelve brilliant self-contained storylines. While maintaining this quality level over forty or so episodes may not have been impossible, it would have been difficult. In only twelve episodes, the main characters of Basil, Sybil, Polly and Manuel are all well-realised and fantastically acted. As the website says, John Cleese was inspired to write Fawlty Towers after visiting a hotel where the manager's conduct left somewhat to be desired - every cloud has a silver lining. If you are an ardent fan of British comedy (like I am), you will probably have already visited this site. If you are a casual fan, then I would encourage you to visit it as well. Some people even think that Fawlty Towers is the greatest
television show ever made.
