The
Missing-
Day Urban
Myth in the book of Joshua
On the web site, About-Him.com G.M. Eades deals with, what he refers to as the Missing Day Urban Myth.
The author states that there is a
story that has been circulating for the past forty years and that it usually begins with the following type of question: Did you know that the space program is busy proving that what has been called myth in the Bible is true? The myth then continues with a reference to one Mr. Harold Hill, President of the Curtis
Engine Company in Baltimore Maryland, and a consultant in the space program.
The question that the author poses is whether NASA computers have really proven Joshua's, long day, and whether the Missing Day ascribed to the events pertaining to Joshua’s battle had been proved scientifically.
In that regard NASA denies that this ever occurred, and Mr. Hill, the former president of the Curtis Engine Company of Baltimore, was involved in diesel engine operations at Goddard, and was not involved with any computer operations.
Eades states that the story is unfortunately an untrue pseudo-Christian myth, and that as far as he could discover it is a hoax, and it never happened. He also says that the story that astronomical calculations proved that a day was missing is over a century old and actually predates Mr. Hill’s NASA version, and goes back to Charles A. L. Totten’s 1890 story entitled, Joshua’s Long Day and the Dial of Ahaz: A Scientific Vindication. He adds that in the last few decades, the myth has been embellished with NASA scientists and computers performing those calculations instead of a sundial and false scientific nonsense. Eades concludes that there is isn't an ounce of truth in the story; that it is a fake; and that it does more damage to the credibility of Christianity, than it does to establishing truth.
