If you want to help in fighting global warming, this Web site is your first stop. The We campaign is a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded by 2007 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore in line with his crusade on global warming.
We’s mission is to drum up awareness in the United States and around the world that “the climate crisis is both urgent and solvable”. The site is primarily addressed to Americans because the U.S. is among the world’s biggest polluters. The U.S. is the only country that refuses to ratify the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement forged to combat global warming.
The Alliance offers several solutions on what individuals, businesses, organizations, political leaders, among others, can do in helping combat global warming.
For one, We advocates investments in green energy and technologies, arguing that the growing environmental awareness would stimulate jobs and lead to a strong economy – as opposed to the Bush administration claim that tightening environmental standards would hurt American jobs. We urges visitors to the site to join its worldwide online petition calling on “elected leaders of the world to sign a global treat that will solve the climate crisis.”
We also promotes energy efficiency by making little changes in the way we live and do things, such as using proper amount of insulation in buildings to save on heating costs or using more energy-efficient appliances or adopting better gas mileage standards.
We encourages people to take action by doing their little bit and pitch in, such as writing to their local leaders and press them to make global warming a priority.
The Web site also contains We campaign success stories that show what individuals, businesses, local governments, among others, are doing to pitch in. It tells of how the Texas town of Sweetwater, which has switched to wind farms for its energy supply. Another is about an Israeli company’s campaign to have most automobiles in the country replaced with electric cars.
