-"The Monthly Rant"- for May, (2006)

-Hello dear reader. For the month of May I've decided to 'veer from the norm', if you will and instead of delving into the worlds of politics, society and religion (well, ok, at the end of this months rant I do mention religion; if only briefly. But you know me by now. I simply can't help myself!) Anyway, instead of visiting these touchstones, which normally comprise the rant I would like to talk instead about being drunk. "Wait. Did I just 'read' him say he's going to talk about being drunk?", I can imagine you're asking.
Yes, that's correct dear reader. I've been experiencing some rough personal crap as of late and at times I enjoy numbing my brain a bit. Is that alright with you!....
Rest assured though. I'm neither here to lecture or bring out any soap-box, promise. I'd merely like to speak on the subject of drunkeness as it applys to ones comprehension of comedy....
It came to me in a dream, ok, a half drunken stupor. But, anywho. Here it is....
When you're just a 'tad' buzzed, say half a sixpack buzzed, political satire, black comedy and the more cerebral forms of humor still strike you as funny and you can still grasp the jokes. It's true. Even as I was draining my third can of Miller, the words of John Stewart, anchorman The Daily Show, remained relevant, timely and hilarious. He was grilling some poor schmuck who'd written a book, or something, and as is his MO, ribbing the guy like crazy.
It was funny. I understood it. Then I cracked open my fourth brew....
"What? Huh? What the hells a Democratic Party"? I slurred aloud. The meaning, the content was lost on me by that point, so I then began to channel surf. I settled on Family Guy. -Peter has a pet Tyranosaurus. It has went and retrieved some guy, clearly mangled, too obviously dead, and thrown him at Peters feet. And all Peter can say is. "Eww. It's all covered it spit".... Hilarious, I'm laughing my ass off and half way thru my fifth brew by this time. Now, don't get me wrong. I've allways found Family Guy funny. But one thing it's never been called is 'smart comedy'.
What the writer is attempting to point out (beside the fact that he is a complete light weight) is that, when you're sober you tend to understand stuff real good. And drinking, well quite honestly, drinking turns you into a complete, drooling idiot....

THE FOLLOWING PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY GENERATION ANY.COM....
Ok. For all you 'zealots' out there. Here's your monthly shot of -Religion:

There was a question posed on CNNs Weekend Live. I don't remember who it was that asked it, it may have even been a viewers poll. But I found it an interesting question never the less. The question was.
"Is pop culture helping to 'change' religion"? Well, since pop culture is the culture of the masses, then a better question might be.
"Isn't religion the 'original' pop culture"?....
It's something to think about? Anyway, until Junes Rant, dear reader....
I, for one, could use a drink.... Michael Steward (Writer In Residence) GenerationAny.com
