The Metropolitan Police’s anti-terrorist branch successfully prevented the terrorist plot to blowup aircraft in mid-flight. In view of this, the security has now been raised to the highest possible level. They have disallowed the entry of hand baggage at UK airports since 10th Aug 2006. The targeted flights were those to leave from UK to USA and the plot was to blow up upto 12 planes. According to MI5, the current UK threat level is critical. There have been arrests of 18 or 19 people in London, though police has not been officially confirmed the same. This was done on the basis of investigations, which were being carried out for several months. According to John Reid, the Home Secretary, the police took major counter-terrorism operations to disrupt major threat to UK and international partners. There is no doubt that this would affect the operations at UK airport. It is however hoped that people would continue with their business as usual. The additional security measures taken at the airport will cause delay to the people but it is a necessity. The people are asked to allow extra time to see that other than acceptable items, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in. This is busy time of the year and the additional security measures have made it difficult for the passengers. The passengers are asked to be patient and understand the need for undertaking the security measures. For doubts with regards to security or in case of any information they need on travel arrangements, they can get in touch with the airlines or carrier. The Metropolitan spokesman would like to assure the public that safety of the passengers is the top most things on mind. There is no doubt that the procedure undertaken is lengthy and difficult, but it is the need of the hour.
