WHY DID DINOSAURS BECOME EXTINCT?

Website Review by: kappa

Dinosaurs were prehistoric reptiles that lived in the Mesozoic era long long before man walked the earth. They went extinct
65 million years ago. However it is still not known exactly how and why the dinosaurs went into mass extinction. There are many theories that try to explain their extinction. The following theory is the most accepted one.
THE ALVAREZ ASTEROID IMPACT THEORY: Alvarez and his geologist son proposed in1980 that an asteroid 6-15 km in diameter hit the earth about 65 million years ago.The impact penetrated the earth's crust and scattered dust and debris in the atmosphere causing huge fires, tsunamis and acidic rain.Plants could not survive so the herbivores died due lack of food and the death of the carnivores followed. Also sunlight was blocked for months and temperature change was also considerable. This theory is supported by the existence of a huge impact crater 180 km wide in the Gulf of Mexico.Scientists have also found chemical evidence that supports this theory.
