Website Review   by:Valerie Coskrey

This is the website for National
Science Teachers Association. NSTA is primarily concerned
with keeping the classroom teachers up-to-date with current research,
technologies, textbooks, materials, ideas and philosophies of modern
science education. NSTA publishes 4 periodicals, one for each
level of science education: elementary school, middle school,
high school, and college. NSTA was instrumental in developing the
standards for science teachers for National Accreditation In
fact, NSTA was one of the organizations that began the movement for
national accreditation. With the American Association for the
Advancement of Science (AAAS), NSTA developed policy statements, goals,
and standards for science teaching based on Science for All Americans:
A Project 2061 Report on Literacy Goals in Science Mathematics and
Technology (AAAS, 1989). Today's concerns include using both
inquiry-based and contructivism-styled techniques for teaching science,
fostering sustainability in dealing wih the natural world, training all
students to think critically and knowledgably, and maintaining a high
level of professionalism within its science teacher membership.

The website, nsta.org, links teachers to other professional
organizations, news stories about issues and happenings in science
teaching and science, teaching tools and ideas, science teaching
equipment suppliers, books and materials sold by NSTA, and information
about upcoming regional and national conventions. There is also a
job search site for members, listing jobs in teaching, academia,
professional organizations, companies, science, government, and
curriculum development in the areas of interest to science educators.

This site is extremely useful for science teachers, especially K-12,
teacher educators, and college instructors of basic science courses for
the non-science major. It is informative to those who care
or are interested in what is happening in current science education in
the United States.
