Siglamag.com

Website Review by: damaris

Siglamag.com is an eclectic mix of all that is interesting in on-line journalism; a veritable feast for the mind and the
eyes, this website has an international flavour, although managed by a group of talented Irish journalists. Here you can find everything from range of colourful feature articles, to remarkable poetry, there are film and music reviews as well as a top quality blog spot for erudite contributors. If you have a penchant for creative writing why not log on and submit a short story, a haiku, poem or even attempt some flash fiction – write a story in twenty-five words! Bit of a challenge!
This website has the look and feel of a top quality glossy with content that surpasses the best of them all. The good news is that the editorial team are willing to accept submissions from anyone who believes they have something valuable to contribute and if you can impress with your writing on-line publication could be forthcoming. The list of contributors is quite extensive and the competition is high, but for talented journalists or writers not yet in print this may well prove to be a site that can give rise to many new careers as it is getting great coverage in the Irish media - both in the national press and on radio. When you consider that the vast majority of contributions come from amateur journalists, writers and photographers this website proves that there is a huge amount of untapped talent out there that is both interesting to the general public and certainly worthy of publication.
From a literary perspective the website contains a number of impressive interviews with some of today's best known and well-loved fiction writers ranging from David Baddiel, to Rick Moody, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sebastian Barry and John Connolly. Also in the Arts section you can peruse the excellent movie and music reviews that are a regular feature on this website. Up to date reviews of the latest cinema releases are added weekly and are always, in my opinion, on the money.
But is the well titled Grey Area 'all kinds of everything' section that makes this website stand out from others of its kind. From photo-essays on post-modern love to reviews of Prague's museum of medieval torture instruments, to a curious and humorous look at the design of continental toilets this section is well worth a look if only to get an insight into the peculiar ramblings and musings of another human mind.
If you feel like having some fun after having checked out the features and the fiction, the reviews and the Blagger's Guide, the magazine features a monthly on-line quiz which is usually light hearted and topical in flavour covering current affairs and celebrity nonsense. You can also contribute your two cents worth in the fortnightly poll.
I came across this website quite by chance as I conducted one of many Google searches for something completely different and have been hooked since then. I look forward to each fortnightly edition and in between each edition I browse the site's engaging message board which is divided into four main sections covering topical chat, arts and culture, sport and creative writing. Here the creative writing forum can often be the site of where aspiring writers can pick up invaluable tips and advice from others on competitions, finding an agent and writing courses amongst other things.
This website has been constructed with care, hard work and love, by journalists who clearly have an eye for detail and a desire to bring it's readers quality and memorable writing. I recommend you take a look and, if you are that way inclined, make your own contribution.
