MASCARA Purpose: Mascara is used to darken and lengthen the eyelashes. This should be applied in several coats only to the eyelash tips to
avoid contact with eyes and
skin.
Types of mascaras:Water-based: These are oil-in-water emulsions where the water readily evaporates and creates a fast-drying effect. If the amount of wax or polymer is increased in it, it becomes water-resistant; if hydrolysed animal protein is added, it conditions the lashes; nylon or rayon fibres elongate them; and polyvinylpyrollidone (PVP) decreases smudging.
Solvent-based: These are formulated with petroleum distillates to which pigments and waxes are added, thus making them water-proof. However, care must be taken to avoid smudging as solvent-based mascaras have a prolonged drying time.
For sensitive skin: Avoid the waterproof mascara since the
removal solvent and rubbing can cause irritation to the eyes. Go for the ones that are hypo-allergenic or water-based instead. Unpigmented mascara (transparent) causes less irritation to the eyes. At times, the problem also lies in the application technique. Most make-up products often
contain potential skin irritants. For the sake of long-term skin health, it is best to use make-up in moderation, particularly in the eye area. Long-lasting make-up may be particularly harmful because it tends to contain harsher chemicals and also requires highly irritating solvents for its removal. Repeated application and removal can make the skin more susceptible to the development of skin damage, warts, moles, sun damage, and skin lesions.
Word of caution: Even though mascaras contain anti-bacterials, it is wise to discard all mascara tubes after three months and not allow multiple persons to use the same mascara tube.
