Indonesia, one of the most volcanically volatile regionsin the world, plans to construct nuclear power plants on the islands of Java and Madura, despite strong protests from
environmental organisations. Indonesia has been investigating a number of energysources, including nuclear energy, in order to meet rapidly increasing energy demands from its population, 60 percent of this energy consumptionoccurs on the densely populated island Java,in the face of spiralling world oil prices. Nearby one of the proposed sites on the island of Java lies a volcano that has been dormant for 3000 years. Despite these plans, the government must win acceptance from the public, particularly considering the fact that foreign investors are to be invited in orderto construct the plants. Environmental lobbyisist such as Greenpeace oppose the moves based upon Indonesia's poor enforcement of safety standards and the region's susceptibility to
earthquakes.
