We need to look at our
energy challenges as opportunities to create a
low carbon world. Possibilities exist for achieving near zero emissions through the use of wind, solar, geothermal, and hydrogen to generate electricity. Our renewables portfolio serves multiple objectives in this quest: improved energy efficiency, enhanced productivity, energy security and oil displacement,
reduction in local
air pollutants, and carbon emission reduction. These technologies do not prejudice the current energy supply system
fossil fuels will continue to remain the backbone of the global energy system if large-scale carbon capture and geologic sequestration can be developed as a realistic option. A low carbon world is achievable, over the long term, only if
government and industry start working together today. New partnerships are needed among government agencies, equipment manufacturers, electric and gas utilities, energy users, and interest groups to increase research and development, raise awareness, and address barriers to the expanded use of renewable energy in the economy. Without strong economic incentives, the world will not make a transition from a fossil energy system to one that does not emit carbon. An attempt to unwind the time by initiating process of reducing levels of Green house gases (GHG) and clean up air for our future generation is what nations are attempting, under one of the most successful international treaties so far the Kyoto Protocol.
