We can't bury our heads in the sand any longer and pretend it isn't happening!
When discussing
the topic of
global warming, here are some of the most common responses I get from skeptics:
"It could just be a climate shift. There's been lots of natural climate shifts throughout history, its not proven that it has anything to do with us."
"It won't happen for ages, why should I think about it?"
"What's the point in me doing anything to help when nobody else is?"
I find all of these responses increasingly infuriating! Firstly, there is scientific proof. Plenty in fact! Do you need to have scientific proof anyway? Surely the drastic weather changes that have taken place recently haven't gone unnoticed? Haven't you seen the footage of polar bears dying and the ice caps melting rapidly? Or do you just chose to ignore it?
Secondly, it is happening quickly. It is happening much more rapidly that was expected and at quite an alarming rate!
Lastly, there is a point in you taking action. If you calculate your carbon emissions it is quite surprising how many you can cut just by doing simple things like turning off lights when you're not using them, not leaving your TV on standby or getting energy efficient light bulbs. They're hardly very difficult things to carry out are they? Plus, it is a well known fact that people are like sheep. If you do it, other people will follow! Just look around your neighbourhood at how competitive people are. One person gets double glazing and you can pretty much ensure that one by one the rest of the street will follow suit.
What I don't understand is why does it have to be a problem that is instantanious before people will stand up and take action? You don't see a candle burning dangerously close to a curtain but think 'Oh, I'll just wait and see if it actually catches fire before I move it' or watch your child playing at the edge of a motorway and think 'Oh it'll be OK.It might never happen!' So why sould it be so different with the case of global warming?
WAKE UP PEOPLE!! I don't want to have the job of explaining to my children why they are going to have to live on a planet that is totally destroyed, and that I didn't bother to do anything to stop it while I could. Do you?
Organisations that I have been extremely impressed with are Global Cool, Team Earth and Stop Global Warming. I would highly recommend looking at their websites for further information on global warming and ways that you can help.
