The Filipino people have long been
dependent on the help of foreign investors. They have also allowed themselves to be enslaved by the foreign employers abroad. Is this all that is left for this noble nation? The poem Manila, May just hold the answer. The poem describes the Filipino as a "hermit crab beside the tide of the times." Now why should such a noble people be described in such a way? So many negative connotations are associated with the crab, for crabs pull each other down, and they are quite stiff. they always move sideward, never to the left or to the right. how is this connected to the Filipino people?
